March 17, 2021 North Linden Area Commission Meeting
Neighborhood updates
- State of the City address was March 15.
- Linden Resilience Walk will coincide with the relaunch of the Linden podcast.
- Homeport has broken ground on Mulby Place, which is a mixed-use development between Cleveland Avenue and the former railroad tracks, south of Myrtle Avenue, just north of Hudson. They're mostly working on earthmoving right now, and improving truck access to the site. Construction expected to wrap up in 2023.
- Kenlawn Place opened last month, 24 residents moved in, 34 apartments still available. Leasing via Wallick Community.
- Nationwide Children's housing program will be building some affordable homes near Mulby Place, in a few years' time.
- Remember Us Urban Scouts offers job training, bicycle rides, and other community for youth in the Linden area.
Demolition Requests
1718 Myrtle Avenue
Owner says that they're demolishing the property in order to alleviate a parking problem on the street, which is being caused by the Mulby Place construction.
The reason for this is to support Ena's Caribbean Kitchen, which had been using a surface lot on the property now fenced off for Mulby Place. The developers will turn the property into a 34-28-spot public parking lot.
2319 Cleveland Avenue
Added to the agenda in error.
2461-2467 Cleveland Avenue
A property by the same owners, which does not yet have a demolition application to the city. The Commission moves to support the demolition of this property, which the city presenters earlier in the meeting had lots of break-ins, and was being used for prostitution. The upper floors of one of the properties are entirely supported by jacks, and the fire department doesn't like it.
Committee reports
- Health And Safety Committee is working with the South Linden Area Commission and the One Linden Commission to do joint programming.
- Zoning is looking for people to participate in the Zoning Committee, and is willing to tailor effort levels to whatever you can give. Contact Commissioner Jasmine Ayers.
- Student Commission Pilot Program: The NLAC Chair wants to hold a Special Meeting to discuss the program mentioned in the February meeting. Commissioner Russell opposes a Special Meeting because the community won't participate as much for an unusual meeting held on April 23 or 30, Saturdays. Commissioner Ayers wants to do the discussion in a regular meeting, but it'd take too long. They decide on Saturday, April 30. Commissioner Russell can't do Saturdays for religious reasons. The rest can't do a Sunday? They settle on Sunday, May 1, at 2:30.
